Sabi ko nga sa kanila natalo man tayo sa Ateneo pero donít give up. Kaya ang motto namin, ĎMatapang ako, lalaban ako, kaya ko -- FEU coach George Pascua
"Matapang ako, lalaban ako, kaya ko."
Far Eastern University head coach George Pascua found a new battle cry for the Lady Tamaraws.
It may sound like a liquor commercial tagline but for what it's worth, it did work for the girls from Morayta.
Coming off a devastating straight sets loss to Ateneo de Manila University, Pascua wanted to uplift the morale of his wards and so he concocted a battle cry as they marched back on the battlefield to face University of the Philippines on Saturday at the Big Dome.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila natalo man tayo sa Ateneo pero don’t give up. Kaya ang motto namin, ‘Matapang ako, lalaban ako, kaya ko,’” Pascua said. “’Yun ang ini-emphasize ko sa mga players ko after namin matalo sa Ateneo. So ‘yun din ang isinisigaw din nila para ma-boost ang morale.”
Those lines were enough to energize the spirits of Lady Tamaraws as they bounced back from a loss with a revenge win over their first round tormentors, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, for a share of the third to fourth spot with University of Sto. Tomas with 7-4 win-loss record.
FEU landed 16 service aces and displayed grit and composure in the crucial stretch of the fourth set.
The Lady Tams broke an 18-18 deadlock with 5-1 run to take a 23-19 lead capped by a France Ronquillo ace. Tots Carlos scored back-to-back to hits before Jerrili Malabanan pushed FEU at match point on a kill. Carlos saved a match point before Heather Guino-o, who had a great outing with a career-high 22 points, smashed the game-winner.
The win gave FEU the much-needed boost heading into their last three games against National University on Wednesday, UST (April 14) and the rematch of last year’s Finals against three-time defending champion De La Salle University (April 28) – all thanks to the Lady Tams’ new mindset.
FEU’s new motto may indeed sound like a familiar tagline, but Pascua insisted that he composed it himself.
“Hindi. Crineate ko lang base dun sa kailangan namin ng team,” he said.
