"Coach just prepares us kasi every training, he just motivates us talaga," - Jules Samonte
Coming from a Rookie of the Year campaign two seasons ago and a being one of the Ateneo Lady Eagles' focal points last season, Jules Samonte has had a generally quiet season this year.
Still, Samonte has been one of the key rotation players for the rampaging Lady Eagles, who have rifled off ten consecutive victories.
In win number ten against the National University Lady Bulldogs, Sunday afternoon at the Araneta Colisuem however, Samonte tallied a season-high 13 markers coming off ten spikes and two serves, earning Player of the Game honors.
Samonte was one of five players to reach double-figures in their four-set win over the Lady Bulldogs.
For the third-year outside hitter, she sees her past performances as learning experiences and as points of improvement.
"Every game has been a learning experience, and I think the past few games have helped me improve also, and also, training, everything happens in training din," Samonte shared.
For Lady Eagles head coach Oliver Almadro, one of the most important things was getting Samonte's confidence back, especially after her performances in the past seasons.
"Ever since, si Jules will always be there naman, alam naman natin na last year, she was one of the go-to-guys ng team, we just really wanted to bring back her confidence and I know meron pa siyang ilalabas."
Samonte also credited Almadro, who she says has been a major source of motivation.
"Coach just prepares us kasi every training, he just motivates us talaga," she said.
With the win, the Lady Eagles are now in the post-season of the UAAP Season 81 Women's Volleyball tournament for the tenth straight season.
More importantly, they take one step closer to regaining the title that they last captured back in UAAP Season 77.
