UAAP Season 81: Nahirapan din sila -- Nierva
After the game kinausap ko kaagad ang team. Sabi ko, ‘Ates I have something to say.' Sabi ko, ‘I’m still happy even though we lost today kasi maganda ang ipinakita natin and nakita ko na nahirapan din sila' -- NU rookie libero Jennifer Nierva

National University rookie libero Jennifer Nierva saw a silver lining in the Lady Bulldogs’ loss against the highly-touted Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles on Sunday.

They may have bowed down in four sets and got booted out of the semifinals race but the rookie-laden Lady Bulldogs made the Lady Eagles sweat to earn their 10th straight win and ticket to the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Final Four.

It was a morale victory for Nierva and NU.

“After the game kinausap ko kaagad ang team. Sabi ko, ‘Ates I have something to say.' Sabi ko, ‘I’m still happy even though we lost today kasi maganda ang ipinakita natin and nakita ko na nahirapan din sila,’” said Nierva after the Lady Bulldogs’ 14-25, 26-24, 17-25, 19-25 defeat at the Big Dome.

NU stole the second set despite suffering a terrible beating in the opening frame.

The Lady Bulldogs went on a 4-0 blast in the second frame to take a 22-19 lead before Ateneo made a rally of its own to move at set point, 24-23. Ivy Lacsina forced a deuce before Joni Chavez scored an ace to give the Lady Bulldogs the set point advantage. Lacsina sealed the set win with a hit to tie the match at one frame apiece.

Although Ateneo took the next two sets to advance to its 10th postgame appearance in a row, NU gave the Lady Eagles a tough time.

“I think achievement na rin ‘yun kasi 10-1 na sila,” added Nierva, who had 30 excellent receptions and 26 digs. “Happy naman ako na ganoon po ang result kasi short talaga nag team namin and I know na we learned something from this.”

Already out of semis contention, NU is now focused on winning their last three games and play the spoiler’s role against Final Four contenders Far Eastern University, University of the Philippines and University of Sto. Tomas.

“Same pa rin, we will give our best every single game,” she said. “’Yung last three, sana makakuha ulit kami ulit ng panalo po.”
