University of Sto. Tomas secured at least a playoff for a Final Four berth.

University of Sto. Tomas secured at least a playoff for a Final Four berth after sweeping University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-12, 26-24, Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Tigresses showed nerves of steel in the closing stretch of the third set, coming back from a 20-23 deficit to complete the straight sets victory and improve to 8-4 win-loss record tied with Far Eastern University. UST’s win also gave idle three-time defending champion De La Salle University at least a semis seat playoff.

Sisi Rondina filled the stats sheet with 20 points higlighted by 17 attacks while adding 15 digs and eight excellent receptions for the Espana-based squad. Rookie Eya Laure had 11 markers while Dimdim Pacres and Kecelyn Galdones posted nine and eight points, respectively, for UST, which pounded 41 spike points.

“Again, masaya kasi total team effort ang nangyari. Kita n’yo ang palitan namin ng tao, buti na lang puro tama ang palit namin. Buti na lang every substitution namin nagko-contribute ng maayos yung tao namin especially yung last four points namin,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes.

Marian Buitre pushed the Lady Maroons at set point, 24-22, but UP was called for a net touch in the next play. Buitre sent her attack long that forced a deuce and Jessma Ramos was whistled for overreaching that put the Tigresses at match point. Eya  Laure sealed the win with a solid kill block on Buitre.

The Lady Maroons absorbed back-to-back losses to slide to 6-6 slate and were pushed on the brink of elimination in the Final Four race.

Buitre led UP with 16 points with all but one coming off attacks while Tots Carlos had 10 markers, 17 digs and 11 excellent receptions. Isa Molde, who came from a left ankle injury, started in all three sets and scored five points.
