Far Eastern University boosted its bid for a Final Four berth.
Far Eastern University improved its chances of claiming a Final Four seat after whipping also-ran National University, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Tamaraws scored their second straight win for an 8-4 win-loss record at third spot. FEU can secure at least a playoff for a semifinals spot if University of Sto. Tomas (7-4) defeats University of the Philippines (6-5) later.
Veterans Heather Guino-o, Jerrili Malabanan and setter Kyle Negrito led the charge of the Lady Tams to claim their first straight sets win of the season.
“Yes, ngayon lang, three sets. Kaya wow! Kasi gawa nga ng tatlong beterano kaya na-achieve namin yun,” said FEU coach George Pascua.
Guino-o scored 11 points with all but one coming off spikes while Malabanan posted all of her 10 points on kills for the Lady Tams. Negrito tallied 21 excellent sets that helped FEU fire 35 spikes while adding five points, three from kill blocks, and seven digs.
The Lady Tams squandered a 22-19 lead as the Lady Bulldogs rallied with three straight points to tie the game at 22. Guino-o gave the lead back to FEU with a down the line hit, NU rookie Princess Robles committed an attack error in the next play before Jeanette Villareal sealed the match with a kill block on Robles.
The Lady Bulldogs absorbed their ninth loss in 12 games. Audrey Paran and Ivy Lacsina scored 11 and nine points, respectively, for NU, which gave away 29 points off errors.
