Ateneo's great wall was nowhere to be seen in its straight sets loss to archrival La Salle
The newest towers in UAAP Women's Volleyball have risen in Katipunan.
Only, Ateneo de Manila University's three-headed great wall of blocks was cut down to size by De La Salle University.
In the rivalry game of the top two teams of the tournament, Saturday at Araneta Coliseum, the Lady Eagles tallied no block points.
This, after averaging 2.62 kill blocks per set - yes, per set - in the 10 games prior.
That was clearly the missing ingredient as Ateneo allowed 37 attacks from their archrivals and ultimately succumbed in straight sets.
The reason for that? They were taken by surprise by all of the Lady Spikers' off-speed and angled hits. "We were expecting hard spikes and they weren't giving that much hard spikes. Puro long balls, touch shots so nagulat siguro kami dumepensa," Maddie Madayag told reporters post-game.
Along with that, the Katipunan volleybelles also had no answer for their archrivals' trademark balance as all of Jolina Dela Cruz, Des Clemente, Aduke Ogunsanya, and May Luna scored somewhere between nine to 14 points.
Still, Ateneo is not sweating the fact that they, the top blocking team in the tournament, had no blocks in this one. "'Di kami mago-overthink. We will just do what we usually do," Madayag said.
Indeed, now, the Lady Eagles are ready and raring to get right back to work. "'Di dapat kami mapagod sa paggawa nang tama. I believe the Lord wants us to win at the right time," head coach Oliver Almadro said.
