DLSU seeks semis seat, Ateneo guns for twice-to-beat
Three-time defending champion De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University collide in another explosive match.

All eyes are set on the much-anticipated rematch between archrivals three-time defending champion De La Salle University and Final Four-bound Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.

At stake in the 4:00 p.m. encounter is a Final Four seat for the Lady Spikers and a semis twice-to-beat advantage for the Lady Eagles. The match will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream.

Ateneo is riding the momentum of its amazing 10-game winning streak and holds a 10-1 win-loss record at the top spot.

The Lady Eagles clinched their 10th straight postseason ticket last week after defeating National University in four sets. A win by Ateneo will also hand the Lady Eagles the top seeding in the semifinals.

But head coach Oliver Almadro would just want his team to focus on the game and not on the standings.

“(The) eliminations will not determine your character right away in the Final Four eh. Basta makapunta ka sa Final Four and then ibang usapan na sa semifinals,” said Almadro, who will pin his hopes on veterans Kat Tolentino, Maddie Madayag, Ponggay Gaston and Bea De Leon.

The Lady Spikers, on the other hand, want to accomplish their current mission of advancing to their 11th postseason appearance.

DLSU sports an 8-3 card at second spot ahead of Far Eastern University and University of Sto. Tomas, which carry 8-4 slates.

The Lady Spikers crushed the Lady Eagles, 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, in their season-opening encounter.

“Well, sa akin kung mabalikan namin ang Ateneo good para sa akin,” said DLSU coach Ramil De Jesus.

The multi-titled mentor added that their mindset is focused on clinching not only a semis seat but also a twice-to-beat advantage.

“Di na importante sa akin ngayon kung sino man ‘yung talunin namin, kung sino man ‘yung daanan namin. Importante sa amin yung standing makuha namin yung no. 2 kasi alam ko imposible na yung No.1 so yung No.2 ‘yung kinakapitan namin,” added De Jesus.

Des Cheng, Tim Tiamzon, rookie Jolina Dela Cruz, Des Clemente and Aduke Ogunsanya will lead the charge of the Lady Spikers.
