Kean Baclaan will give a much-needed jolt of life to currently downed DLSZ
De La Salle Zobel has not made it past the elimination round of the UAAP Juniors Basketball Tournament in the last two years.
Now, however, they may very well have the player to energize them back into contention.
Pint-sized scoring dynamo Kean Baclaan shared Saturday that he has transferred to DLSZ from San Sebastian College-Recoletos. "Opo. Zobel na po ako," he said.
In Baclaan, the Junior Archers will have a point guard who only stands at 5-foot-8, but was still able to put up per game counts of 14.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.6 steals in the NCAA Juniors last season.
He has range in his shot, but more often than not, he takes it to the rim without any fear. However, he has to take better care of the ball after averaging 4.9 turnovers.
Still, that size and that skillset will be much welcome in Alabang as the last time their team was in contention, they were being led by a pint-sized scoring dynamo who was also quite turnover-prone.
In his last year in DLSZ, Aljun Melecio normed 22.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals, and 3.7 turnovers - comparable numbers to those of Baclaan - and led them to a runner-up finish.
That is exactly why, in the eyes of the coaching staff, they may very well have their "new Aljun Melecio." "That's the plan, that he can be like Aljun, but only time will tell," head coach Boris Aldeguer said.
The 16-year-old will have three years to play in green and white starting Season 82.
