UAAP 81 Football: Ateneo, UP battle to a 1-1 draw
Ateneo and Katipunan battled to a 1-1 stalemate in the second round of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Standings

The second round of the Katipunan Derby ended in a stalement, as league-leading Ateneo de Manila University and defending champions University of the Philippines battled to a 1-1 stalemate in the second round of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football tournament, Sunday morning at the FEU Diliman Football Field.

Ateneo was looking to get payback for their 2-1 loss in the first round, while UP had their sights set on a season sweep and moving up for a share of the top seed.

The action was intense early, as Fighting Maroons scored early, courtesy of striker King Miyagi who found the back of the net in just the sixth minute of action.

Just three minutes later, the Blue Eagles managed to pull even thanks to Rupert Baña's equalizer.

Action remained competitve throughout the rest of the match, as both Katipunan-based sides traded attempts, but neither could find a go-ahead goal.

"I'm happy kasi both teams, they showed the character ng both teams, talagang they wanted the three points, pero in the end, at least we go home with one point, so we're happy na rin sa result na 'to," said Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida. "It's a good game, playing against the defending champions, it's an honor, talagang it's a privelege. I'm happy kasi yung players ko, they performed talaga."

"We didn't play a good first half, we weren't able to adjust right away to Ateneo's pressing, but I thought we did better in the second half, we were able to build up better and create more scoring opportunities," expressed UP head coach Anto Gonzales. "We had a few good chances towards the end, but we weren't able to convert those chances."

After the draw, Ateneo remains at the top of the table with 23 points off seven wins, two draws, and three losses.

UP meanwhile, remains at third place with six wins, two draws, and four losses for 20 points.
