Three-time defending champion De La Salle University is already gearing up for a Final Four battle with University of Sto. Tomas.
Three-time defending champion De La Salle University is already looking at University of Sto. Tomas as its opponent in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Final Four.
Even with still a game remaining for both squads in the elimination round and the pairings yet to be determined, head coach Ramil De Jesus is gearing up for a clash with the Tigresses in the semifinals – a rematch of their Season 79 Final Four meeting.
DLSU secured at least a playoff for the last Final Four twice-to-beat advantage with its fifth straight win at the expense of University of the East, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19, on Wednesday.
The Lady Spikers improved to 10-3 win-loss record behind league-leading Ateneo de Manila University (11-2). UST is currently at third spot with a 9-4 record while Far Eastern University is already locked at no. 4 spot with an 8-5 slate.
“Wala naman kasing chance na makaakyat pa ang FEU so talagang UST na,” said DLSU coach Ramil De Jesus. “Just in case manalo kami sa Sunday o matalo kami sa Sunday sila pa rin ang kalaban namin, so kaming dalawa pa rin.”
The Lady Spikers can clinch the last twice-to-beat advantage with a win over the Lady Tamaraws on Sunday or if the Tigresses drop their last elims assignment against National University on Sunday.
“After ng game sa Sunday talagang sa kanila na kami naka-focus,” added De Jesus.
The Lady Spikers and Tigresses split their elims head-to-head with UST taking the first round in straight sets before DLSU exacted revenge in their rematch in four sets.
If DLSU loses its last game and UST wins against NU, the Lady Spikers and Tigresses will have a playoff for the last semis incentive.
But the prospect of the Taft-based squad’s Final Four meeting with UST can change if DLSU wins its last game and the Lady Eagles bow down to UE on Sunday. In this scenario of a two-way tie at 11-3, the Lady Spikers will move up as the no. 1 seed by virtue of winner the other.
