UAAP Season 81: Lady Eagles clinch first semis advantage

Ateneo de Manila University secured the first Final Four twice-to-beat advantage.
Ateneo de Manila University clinched the first UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Final Four twice-to-beat advantage after sweeping Adamson University, 25-16, 28-26, 25-17, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles rediscovered its winning ways as well as its vaunted blockings as Ateneo solidified its hold of the top spot with an 11-2 win-loss record. The Katipunan-based squad can secure the no. 1 seed in the Final Four with another victory on Sunday against University of the East.
Kat Tolentino rebounded from a six-point outing in a straight sets loss to three-time defending champion De La Salle University before the Holy Week with 17 markers off 12 attacks and five kill blocks for the Lady Eagles.
"It just goes to show that we have to be able to adjust when things don't go our way. Today was a good test for us," said Tolentino.
Maddie Madayag scored 13 markers anchored on nine kills, three kill blocks and an ace while Ponggay Gaston and Bea De Leon posted nine and six points, respectively, for Ateneo.
Ateneo battled Adamson to a tight second set with the Lady Falcons moving at set point, 24-23, before the Lady Eagles score the next two points for a 25-24 lead. Adamson tied it at 25 before Vannie Gandler put Ateneo back on top. Bernadette Flora forced another deuce, 26-26, before Ponggay Gaston’s kill block and a dink to take the frame.
The Lady Eagles were quick to adjust as they cruised in the third set to finish off the Lady Falcons, who fell to their ninth straight defeat for a 1-12 slate.
Flora and Chiara Permentilla registered nine points each for Adamson. Flora added 25 digs and 18 excellent receptions.
