Worry not, La Salle, you still have your point guard of the future in Joel Cagulangan
The player who led La Salle Green Hills to its maiden championship in the NCAA Juniors will remain in green and white after re-affirming his commitment to De La Salle University.
Joel Cagulangan, the NCAA 94 Juniors MVP and consensus best point guard in high school, silenced all rumors on Friday by categorically stating that he will be joining the Green Archers come UAAP 82.
This, after an offseason that had whispers saying he is rethinking his future.
"La Salle po talaga ako. Hindi magbabago," he told ABS-CBN Sports, explaining his decision.
In May of last year, the Taft-based team had already secured the services of the 5-foot-9 playmaker.
“Sa La Salle po ako maglalaro (sa college), yung dream school ko po,” he already said then, even though he still had one year of eligibility left in the NCAA Juniors.
He then proceeded to play out his fourth and final year for LSGH, doing it all as per usual with per game counts of 18.7 points, 7.1 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.1 steals.
Cagulangan and his team ultimately fell to Mapua High School in the three-game Finals, the last game of which saw him incur a foot injury.
Months later, it was revealed that the now 18-year-old had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his ankle.
Now, he will continue with his rehabilitation all while still standing as La Salle's point guard of the future.
When Cagulangan takes the floor once more, he will bolster a backcourt that already includes former Rookies of the Year Andrei Caracut and Aljun Melecio and transferees Jordan Bartlett and Kurt Lojera.
