UAAP Season 81: FEU stuns DLSU to close elims on a high note
Far Eastern University exacted revenge on first round tormentor three-time defending champion De La Salle University in a rematch of last year's Finals.

Far Eastern University ended its elimination round campaign with a bang after stunning three-time defending champion De La Salle University in a come-from-behind, 25-22, 13-25, 15-25, 27-25, 15-8, win on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Tamaraws finished the elims with a 9-5 win-loss record and ended an eight-game losing skid against the Lady Spikers since the Season 78 semifinals clincher.

FEU’s victory sent DLSU reeling to its fourth loss in 14 games, forcing the Lady Spikers to a playoff for the last Final Four twice-to-beat advantage against University of Sto. Tomas (10-4) on Wednesday at the same venue at 3:30 p.m.

“For me para sa ano no bearing pero sabi ko para sa amin, sabi ko nga sa kanila is labanan ng pride eh. Kahit na no bearing siya importante na manalo kami. So yun ang mindset ng mga players,” said FEU coach George Pascua, whose squad will face twice-to-beat Ateneo de Manila University in the Final Four.

Heather Guino-o showed the way for the Lady Tams with 24 points including 20 from spikes and played clutch in the fifth set.

Jerrili Malabanan had 15 markers while Czarina Carandang got eight points for the Morayta-based squad, which survived the match despite allowinn the Lady Spikers to land 16 aces. Buding Duremdes had 37 digs and six excellent receptions for the Lady Tams.

Guino-o pushed FEU to an 8-4 lead in the deciding frame as the Lady Tamaraws sustained their momentum after surviving an extended fourth set. FEU pulled away with a 6-3 blast capped by a Guino-o off speed.

Aduke Ogunsanya saved a match point on a running attack before DLSU rookie Jolina Dela Cruz sent her attack wide as the Lady Spikers surrendered the match.

FEU squandered a 20-15 lead in the fourth set as DLSU moved at match point on a May Luna hit. Guino-o forced a deuce on an off speed hit and the Lady Tams got the set point after the Lady Spikers committed an error.

Dela Cruz tied it at 25 on a down the line smash before Aduke and Lourdes Clemente committed back-to-back attack errors that forced a decider.

Dela Cruz finished with 22 points off 15 kills, six aces and a kill block spiked with 18 digs and seven excellent receptions for DLSU. Tin Tiamzon had 17 points while Luna added 15 markers for the Lady Spikers.
