Regardless of University of Sto. Tomas' position in the Final Four, the Tigresses are ready for battle just like their faithful.
University of Sto. Tomas head coach Kungfu Reyes is already thinking about the Tigresses’ match against three-time defending champion De La Salle University in the Final Four – with or without a twice-to-beat advantage.
“It’s a pleasure with us to play with the defending champions,” said Reyes on Saturday after the Tigresses defeated National University, 27-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16, at the close of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball elimination round.
The Tigresses finished the elims with a 10-4 win-loss record behind the Lady Spikers (10-3). UST can force a playoff for a semis twice-to-beat advantage if DLSU loses to Far Eastern University on Sunday in a rematch of last year’s Finals.
DLSU can clinch the last Final Four advantage outright with a win over the Lady Tams and will lock the Tigresses at no. 3.
“’Yun naman ang tinitignan namin dun. Even kami this season, 1-1 kami, so magkakaalaman na ngayong semis,” said Reyes, whose squad beat the Lady Spikers in the first round before bowing down in their rematch.
“Kung makuha nila ‘yung twice-to-beat, so be it,” added Reyes, whose squad lost to DLSU in Season 79 semis. “Tatrabahuin na lang namin.”
But there is also a possibility of UST and DLSU facing different opponents if Ateneo de Manila University (11-2) loses to University of the East on Sunday.
In a scenario where the Lady Spikers win over FEU and the Lady Eagles bow to the Lady Warriors for a two-way tie at 11-3, DLSU will get the No. 1 seed for a showdown with the Lady Tamaraws in the Final Four.
But regardless of the results of the last elims playdate, UST is ready for battle.
“Ire-ready namin yung tropa, ire-ready namin ng Wednesday, ire-ready namin ng Sabado. Positive note kami lagi. Kung ano’t ano man ang mangyayari, naka-ready kami either Wednesday or Sabado yung magiging laro,” said Reyes.
