UAAP Season 81 Final Four: UST treats FEU to merienda
The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws were all smiles after receiving a free merienda of pancit from their neighbors from Espana.

Far Eastern University did University of Sto. Tomas a great favor when the Lady Tamaraws defeated three-time champion De La Salle University last Sunday.

Though the game last Sunday may have been a no-bearing match with FEU already locked at no. 4 spot in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament, the Lady Tams gave the Tigresses a chance to vie for the no. 2 spot and twice-to-beat advantage in a playoff with the Lady Spikers.

As a gesture of goodwill and appreciation, the Espana-based squad gifted its hard-working Morayta neighbor with a bilao of pancit for merienda.

The gesture was similar to something done by Rain or Shine to NorthPort in the PBA last month.

Tigresses assistant coach Yani Fernandez confirmed that they gave FEU a bilao of pancit while other fans and supporters of the team also gave the Lady Tams free food.

"Yes yung pancit lang," said Fernandez in a message to ABS-CBN Sports. "Wala lang, pang-congrats and thank you lang."

Fernandez explained that it all started in a light moment between the UST coaching staff and FEU's coach George Pascua and deputy Rei Diaz during the National University Lady Bulldogs' win over University of the Philippines before the Holy Week break that secured the Tigresses and Lady Tams' entry to the Final Four.

"Dati kasi nagbibiruan kami nila Coach George and Coach Rei sa Game ng UP vs. NU na mag-share-share kami magbigay ng pansit kay Coach Norman (Miguel) kasi tinalo nila ang UP. Doon nagsimula," he said.

They may be the bitterest of rivals in UAAP women's volleyball in terms of their champioship tradition but the two teams have the utmost respect and admiration with each other.

And as Fernandez would simply put it, "Sabi nga love your neighbor."

UST and DLSU will tangle in a playoff for the semifinals privilege on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan in a virtual best-of-three series between the two squads that lest met in the Final Four in Season 79.

The Final Four will start this weekend.

The Lady Tams face no. 1 seed twice-to-beat Ateneo de Manila University in the other semifinals pairing.
