University of Sto. Tomas' Sisi Rondina downplays her tag as top Most Valuable Player contender.
University of Sto. Tomas hopefuls showered Sisi Rondina with ‘MVP!’ chants after every point and whenever she’s in her favorite spot to serve.
As much as the graduating hitter appreciates the cheers of the her supporters, the hardworking Rondina downplayed the possibility of her earning the highest individual award but would rather focus on the Tigresses’ goal of marching back to the Finals and accomplishing their ultimate dream of reclaiming the crown.
“They’re just happy, ‘yun lang,” said the fifth-year Rondina referring to the UST crowd that trooped to the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Cebuana star fired 29 points to lead UST to a 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19, win over three-time defending champion De La Salle University on Wednesday in a playoff for the no. 2 spot and twice-to-beat advantage in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Final Four.
Rondina’s energy and aggressiveness were the catalysts in the Tigresses’ charge, lifting UST past the same squad that they will face in the Final Four starting Sunday. The Tigresses hold a 2-1 advantage over the Lady Spikers in their head-to-head this season.
UST earned its first semis advantage since ending up as runner-up to DLSU in Season 73, also the Tigresses’ last championship appearance.
For Sisi what’s more important is to realize their dream of a finals stint.
“Sabi ko nga kay coach (nu’ng) fourth year, ako sinabi niya sa akin ‘yung gusto namin sa team, magpa-Finals kami. Sabi ko nga, ‘Sige coach tulungan tayo,’” she said.
“Tinext nga niya ako kanina, every time na pumupunta ako sa game ‘yun lang manalo, manalo at magtiwala lang na kaya namin. ‘Yun nga hindi pa huli ang liga, hindi pa tapos ‘yung liga kaya pagtatrabahuan,” said Rondina, who averaged 18.5 points per game in the elims.
