A last-minute goal from rookie Xavier Zubiri was all that DLSU needed to secure a spot in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Final Four.
De La Salle University punched their ticket to the Final Four after a last-minute goal pushed them past Far Eastern University, 1-0, in the final match day of the elimination round of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament, Thursday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field.
Both DLSU and FEU had motivation to come out on top in their final matchup, with the Tamaraws gunning for the top of the standings, and DLSU looking to secure a spot in the semifinal round.
In a highly-contested 90-minutes of action, DLSU and FEU pushed their offense and traded some excellent opportunities to get on the board.
It wasn't until the first minute of of injury time that the scorelines finally shifted, as rookie Xavi Zubiri was able to slot the ball off a corner kick.
With about four minutes of injury time remaining, FEU tried to come up with an equalizer, and had one final shot with a corner kick, but ultimately could not convert.
"Walang bibitaw talaga, hanggang 90 minutes," said DLSU head coach Alvin Ocampo. "Trinabaho talaga nila yung game, we managed to get the queen, I'm happy for the result, at least pasok kami sa Final Four."
"Kung sino na yung gustong manalo ngayon pagpasok ng Final Four, yun na yung [labanan] natin diyan eh, who wants to win more. Attitude and character na 'yan, everything mental. At least hindi kami last day ngayon."
With the win, DLSU ends the elimination round with 8 wins, 1 draw, and 5 losses for 25 points. They move into the third seed, overtaking fourth-seeded FEU, who end the eliminations with 7 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses for 24 points.
Moreover, the DLSU win eliminates University of Santo Tomas, who were hoping for at least a DLSU draw. The Growling Tigers, last season's finalists, can finish the season with a maximum of 23 points, just one behind fourth-seeded FEU.
