Aalagaan namin yung pagkakataon na ‘yun and sabi ko nga ako na ‘yung magli-lead sa teammates ko and lahat lahat gagawin ko maitaas lang namin ‘yung team -- UST graduating hitter Sisi Rondina
University of Sto. Tomas may have armed itself with a twice-to-beat advantage in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Final Four, but the Tigresses remain wary of the three-time defending champion De La Salle University’s experience and desire to extend its dynasty.
“Mindset ko is ‘wag lang maging complacent sa kung anong meron kasi anytime pag nag-relax kami pwedeng mawala ‘to,” said rookie Eya Laure.
The Tigresses made their return to the semifinals after missing last year’s cut and for the first time since Season 73 - the squad’s last Finals appearance - UST will be equipped with a Final Four advantage.
The Espana-based squad clinched the incentive after downing the Lady Spikers 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19, on Wednesday in a playoff.
The two squads will meet again on Sunday with the golden ticket to the best-of-three Finals is at stake.
Graduating hitter Sisi Rondina, who was the hero of their previous triumph after scoring 29 points, wants her team to keep their focus on the task at hand.
“Aalagaan namin yung pagkakataon na ‘yun and sabi ko nga ako na ‘yung magli-lead sa teammates ko and lahat lahat gagawin ko maitaas lang namin ‘yung team,” said Rondina, who won four titles for UST in beach volleyball. “Alam ko naman nandyan lahat sila. Nasa likod ko lang sila iko-combine namin ‘yun, tatrabahuin sa training pa lang.”
For Laure, it is important that the Tigresses end the match on Sunday and to not let their guards down and give DLSU a chance to mount a comeback.
“’Pag natalo kami. knock on wood, kung anu’t ano man ‘yung nangyari pwedeng maging best-of-three ‘yung kakalabasan,” she said. “In order para makapasok sa next naming goal is maging consistent, wag maging complacent, wag mag-relax, magtiwala sa sarili, magwork hard pa sa team lalo na sa training and yun ‘Whatever it takes’. Gawin talaga yung best.”
In needed, the do-or-die semis game is on Wednesday.
