Ateneo is nothing but confident that its Finals series opposite UST would be a good one
Ateneo de Manila University scored an emotional victory versus Far Eastern University, Wednesday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
“It’s really nice to hear that Ateneo is back in the Finals,” Maddie Madayag beamed in the post-game conference following their four-set win - a win that makes sure the tournament’s top-seed wasn’t going away earlier than expected.
Of course, the Lady Eagles are well aware that the championship itself remains up for grabs. “There’s one more job to do, but we’re thankful we got here,” team captain Bea De Leon shared.
Head coach Oliver Almadro only shared the same sentiment. As he put it, “‘Di pa rito tapos yung mission nila.”
Indeed, after getting the Lady Tamaraw monkey off its back, Ateneo now turns its attention to a face-off with rejuvenated University of Sto. Tomas. “Alam naman natin sa umpisa pa lang yung firepower ng UST. Tapos they are well-rested, so yun ang advantage,” Coach O said.
The Golden Tigresses are led into battle by MVP frontrunner Sisi Rondina and Rookie of the Year favorite Eya Laure. They also took care of business in just their first try in the semifinals up against De La Salle University.
That means that come Game 1 of the Finals, they would have had five days to prepare.
What the Lady Eagles wouldn’t have in terms of rest, though, they would be compensating for with a stronger will. “Yung mental toughness, yung heart, yung will, tumibay,” their mentor said after they came out on top in a competitive matchup versus FEU.
And whatever happens then, they only vow to put up a good fight. “We will give them a beautiful game, yun ang samin,” Coach O said.
Ateneo and UST clash in the championship round for the first time, Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
