The four best teams battle for a spot in the UAAP Season 81 Men's football finals
MATCHES on THURSDAY, MAY 9 (Rizal Memorial Football Stadium)
2:00 PM - (2) UP vs. (3) DLSU
4:00 PM - (1) Ateneo vs. (4) FEU
The four best teams battle for a spot in the finals, as league-leading Ateneo de Manila faces fourth-seeded Far Eastern University, and defending champions University of the Philippines meets third-seeded De La Salle University in the Final Four of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament, Thursday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
In the first match of the afternoon, defending titleholders UP try to get back into the finals for the second straight year when they take on title-hungry DLSU.
After a dismal first round, the Fighting Maroons turned things around in the second half of the season, going undefeated in the second round and ultimately clinching the second seed. The Diliman-based side will be looking to capture their third UAAP Men's Football crown in the last four seasons.
DLSU meanwhile, is looking to get back to the season finale for the first time since Season 77, with the hopes of bringing another men's football title back to Taft Avenue for the first over two decades.
DLSU took their first round matchup, 2-1, with Shanden Vergara scoring a brace. UP got their payback in Round 2 with a 2-0 win led by King Miyagi and Karl Bugayong.
UP and DLSU do battle at 2:00 PM.
In the main match of the day, the number one seed Ateneo will look to get back into the finals against fourth-seeded FEU.
Also getting off to a slow start in the season, Ateneo went winless in their first three matches before winning six of their next seven matches to keep themselves firmly in the playoff hunt. The Blue Eagles are targeting their third Finals berth in the last four seasons.
After last season's disappointing 7th-seed finish, the Tamaraws managed get back to the upper-level of UAAP men's football competition as they held on to the top of the standings for a good part of the season. After an unbeaten first round run however, four losses in the second round dropped FEU to the fourth seed.
Ateneo and FEU went to a 1-1 draw in their first round matchup, but the Blue Eagles gained the upper hand in the second round with a dominant 4-1 win, led by Jacob Liao's brace.
Ateneo and FEU face off at 4:00 PM.
