Masaya pa rin kasi lumaban kami hanggang dulo at naibigay namin ‘yung best namin. Babawi kami ni Ate (EJ), next year -- Eya Laure

University of Sto. Tomas rookie Eya Laure may have fallen short of her promise to graduating hitter Sisi Rondina of a glorious exit but the feisty volleybelle promised to come back stronger next year.

The Rookie of the Year winner vowed that the Tigresses will get that elusive crown in the UAAP Season 82 women’s volleyball tournament with her sister, EJ, beside her.

“Masaya pa rin kasi lumaban kami hanggang dulo at naibigay namin ‘yung best namin. Babawi kami ni Ate (EJ), next year,” said the younger Laure on Saturday after the UST bowed down to Ateneo de Manila University, 17-25, 22-25, 22-25, in the decider of the best-of-three Finals series at the MOA Arena.

The Tigresses came two sets closer to their first crown in nine years in Game 2 last Wednesday but the Lady Eagles denied them that chance as Ateneo equalized before eventually reclaiming the title after a four-year wait.

Laure suffered a left ankle sprain at the start of the third set in Game 2 and since then the spiker played with diminished explosiveness.

Laure scored a quiet 10 points in Game 3 as Ateneo swept UST and denied Rondina, the Season Most Valuable Player, the exit Laure promised.

“Proud ako na nadala ko si Ate Sisi sa championship. Masaya kasi natupad ko ‘yung pangako ko pero hindi ko lang nagawa ng maayos,” said Laure.

EJ Laure, who won the RoY in Season 77, skipped action for two straight years due to a shoulder injury.

“Hopefully next year (makabalik ako). Hopefully sana,” said EJ Laure, who watched from the sidelines the fall of the Tigresses, who won the series opener last week.

Now with the valuable championship experience to back them up and the possibility of EJ’s return, Laure and the Tigresses are looking at a better future.

“Babawi kami. Kasama ko na ang Ate ko next year. Babawi kami,” Laure said.
