Raffy Verano and Jolo Mendoza will be filing an appeal to let them play in the oncoming UAAP 82 despite academic deficiencies
Ateneo de Manila University may have more open roster spots to fill as it prepares to defend its title in the oncoming UAAP 82.
Raffy Verano and Jolo Mendoza, two key contributors for the Blue Eagles, are, at present, dealing with academic deficiencies.
“Jolo Mendoza and Raffy Verano are not going (with us in our overseas training) because they’ll be under academic suspension next semester,” head coach Tab Baldwin revealed to reporters after they claimed the 2019 PBA D-League championship, Tuesday at Ynares Center in Pasig.
The two-time kings of the UAAP are bound for Greece and then Singapore and Australia as they gear up for UAAP 82.
For that overseas training, however, Verano and Mendoza will be staying behind as they work out on an appeal to let them play despite falling short of the QPI (Quality Point Index) Ateneo requires of its student-athletes.
That also means that the Blue Eagles may need to find two more players to call up to Team A other than the roster spots that had been vacated by graduated Anton Asistio as well as Aaron Black.
Last season, Verano averaged 7.6 points and 5.1 rebounds while starting 12 games while Mendoza normed 3.9 points while shooting 40 percent from three.
