Raffy Verano and Jolo Mendoza are both hopeful for the best, but also expecting the worst.
Raffy Verano and Jolo Mendoza are both in danger of missing the upcoming UAAP 82.
Ateneo de Manila University’s two key contributors are, at present, dealing with academic deficiencies.
According to them, though, they will still be filing an appeal to let them play despite falling short of the QPI (Quality Point Index) required of Blue Eagles.
“The academics in Ateneo, they are real. It’s no joke and the guys have to perform in the classroom,” head coach Tab Baldwin said. “When they don’t, there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Whatever happens with the appeal, however, both Verano and Mendoza are prepared to take responsibility. “I shouldn’t be in this position and I shouldn’t put my team in this position, but it happens and I gotta roll with it,” the former said.
He then continued, “I’m just preparing myself for anything right now.”
Mendoza was of the same mind. As he put it, “I may have to sit out this year. Wala na akong magagawa dyan.”
He then continued, “I’m still hoping for the best, but also expecting the worst.”
According to the two, they will be submitting their letters of appeal within the week and will be receiving the final decision the following week.
If worse comes to worst, the two are only prepared to see the silver lining. “I will use this to get stronger and hopefully, take my game to the next level when I come back in Season 83,” the sharpshooter from Ateneo’s proud high school program said.
The versatile Filipino-American forward can only agree. “I’ll take this as a stepping stone to better myself. I’m gonna try to be better as a person - better on the books and better in basketball,” he said.
