True to form, head coach Tab Baldwin said Ateneo is far from prepared for its title defense
Cignal-Ateneo was crowned the brand new king of the PBA D-League.
Imposing their will in the face of a gallant stand by CEU, the Blue Eagles wrapped up a dominant championship that saw them dropping only two games throughout the tournament in 2019.
With that strong showing, head coach Tab Baldwin is satisfied. "You know, it's good to win the championship. I think, our goals for the D-League were accomplished," he told reporters after their wrapped up the Finals in four games last Tuesday.
He then continued, "We wanted to begin to develop our systems and try ourselves against somebody other than our practice players in our practice environment. We did that."
Of course, Coach Tab will not be Coach Tab if he is 100 percent satisfied.
Not even half an hour after hoisting the trophy, the two-time collegiate champion coach said his boys are far from prepared from defending their title, this time in the upcoming UAAP. As he put it, "We're not ready. We're not even close."
He then continued, "I feel like we've almost been on cruise control up to this point in time."
Ateneo has two more months to gear up for UAAP 82 where they will try to go for a three-peat.
At present and even after winning it all in the developmental league, though, Coach Tab, without a doubt, has many, many pointers for improvement for his wards.
Also true to form, however, the brilliant tactician has full faith that the Blue Eagles are nonetheless on track in their preparations. "We're still babies right now in terms of our systems development and we've got a long way to go. We're not ready for the UAAP, but we will get there," he said.
