Even without two of its top guns, the University of the Philippines still had more than enough to begin the 2019 Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Cup with a bang.
Following the lead of Kobe Paras, the Fighting Maroons mowed down National Taiwan Sport University and marched forward to a convincing 76-61 victory, Tuesday in Taiwan.
Paras starred for Philippine State U with 15 points, nine coming in the second quarter.
Jun Manzo was right there with him, scoring all but two of his 13 points in the same timeframe to help UP overcome the absence of Juan Gomez de Liano and Ricci Rivero who did not travel with the team as they tended to back spasms and an ankle sprain, respectively.
Bright Akhuetie and Javi Gomez de Liano also added 10 points apiece for the Fighting Maroons who will next face off with Huaquiao University.
UP 76 - Paras 15, Manzo 13, Mantilla 11, Akhuetie 10, Gomez de Liano 10, Murrell 5, Tungcab 4, Jaboneta 3, Webb 2, Gozum 2, Spencer 1, Gob 0.
QUARTER SCORES: 20-20, 48-35, 59-53, 76-61
