RJ Abarrientos' next year will be all about geatting ready and raring for his rookie season for FEU in UAAP 83
RJ Abarrientos’ debut for Far Eastern University’s Srs. Squad will not take place in 2019.
Abarrientos, the 5-foot-11 do-it-all guard who had been a key cog for the Baby Tamaraws in the last four years, will not be suiting up for the Tamaraws just yet as he still needs to finish high school.
"I have one more year in high school so kailangan ko po munang tapusin yun," he answered when asked about an update of his status.
To this day, it has been a year and a half since Abarrientos committed to continue with FEU's Srs. squad.
The nephew of Philippine basketball legend - and Morayta great - Johnny Abarrientos, however, made it clear that he has been passing his classes in FEU-Diliman and his academic deficiency originated from his previous school Angelicum College. "'Di po sa FEU yung naging problema. Sa dati ko pong school nagka-problem," he shared.
Whatever it is, the academic deficiency has forced the now 19-year-old to have to wait longer to be able to continue his tito’s legacy.
If not for the unfortunate development, he would have been eligible for the green and yellow in the oncoming UAAP 82.
This, after he posted per game counts of 16.3 points, including 34 percent shooting from deep, on top of 5.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists in his fourth and final year as a Baby Tamaraw and then placed sixth in the 2019 NBTC 24.
An all-around talent, Abarrientos was being eyed to further bolster a backcourt for FEU now in the hands of L-Jay Gonzales.
After all, in the Jrs., the two proved to be championship-caliber guards.
Still, he is choosing to see the silver linings. "Siyempre, mas kailangan ko pa pong mag-improve so gagamitin ko po 'to to get better. May tiwala naman po ako kay God na kaya siguro niya ako nilagay sa ganitong situation ay para mas maging mature ako," he shared.
He then continued, "Sinabi ko naman po kay Coach Olsen [Racela] na lagi lang akong ready if kailangan niya ako."
