Ateneo de Manila University took Adamson University's best shot, but still ultimately took a convincing 70-52 victory to open its title defense in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.

The Blue Eagles got off to a 16-6 start in the opening salvo and were in complete command for majority of the matchup.

That was until Valandre Chauca and Jerrick Ahanmisi got together to give life to the Soaring Falcons, shooting their side to just within five, 52-57, inside the last five minutes.

The two-time defending champions would not allow them to come any closer, however, as their defense was impenetrable while their offense rang off 13 unanswered points the rest of the way.

In the end, Ange Kouame showed the way with a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double on top of six blocks and three steals. Thirdy Ravena had his own 10 markers, 13 boards, and four dimes to help Ateneo score a strong start in its quest for a three-peat.

Matt Nieto also added 13 points, four assists, two rebounds, and two steals as the Blue Eagles' first five dominated their counterparts by a score of 53-21.

Credit for the win, though, also goes for a defense that limited Ahanmisi to just seven points in 3-of-12 shooting and all of Adamson to 33 percent from the field.

Still, the Soaring Falcons had a ray of light in the form of one-and-done guard Valandre Chauca who opened eyes with a 17-point, four-assist performance off the bench. That was far from enough, however, to prevent them from losing their first game in the tournament.
