Javi Gomez de Liano took the thunder away from the University of the Philippines' many other weapons and towed his team to a gutsy 61-55 decision against brave Far Eastern University, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.

The fourth-year forward turned in a career game with 22 points, six rebounds, and three assists, but it was reigning and defending MVP Bright Akhuetie who tallied the go-ahead hook shot over the outstretched arms of Patrick Tchuente.

Jun Manzo's four freebies then sealed the deal in the Fighting Maroons' character win to commence their campaign in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.

State U had a double-digit lead for much of the first half until L-Jay Gonzales energized the Tamaraws into tying the tally at 55-all with four minutes remaining.

That was the closest they could come, however, as the maroon and white defense stood strong until the final buzzer.

At the other end, timely makes from Akhuetie and Manzo made sure UP lived up to all to the preseason hype.

In the end, Akhuetie had seven points and 11 rebounds to his name while Manzo had nine markers, four boards, four assists, and two steals of his own.

Ricci Rivero also added seven points and six rebounds, including a highlight alley-oop dunk in the first quarter in his debut as a Fighting Maroon.

For FEU, Brandrey Bienes topped the scoring column with nine points while Gonzales wound up with eight markers, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. With their rally running out of gas in the endgame, however, they suffered a setback to start the season.
