With all eyes on Bright Akhuetie, Juan Gomez de Liano, Jun Manzo, Kobe Paras, and Ricci Rivero, it was actually Javi Gomez de Liano who stole the show for the University of the Philippines in their opener in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.
The fourth-year forward brought big-time contributions off the bench with 22 points, six rebounds, and three assists to show the Fighting Maroons the way to a well-earned win against fellow playoff hopeful Far Eastern University.
All throughout, Javi GDL seemed stronger, quicker, more confident, more determined, and, all in all, just better than he has ever been.
Why is that? Well, the 20-year-old went out of his way to lessen his load - literally. "It was really a goal for me to be more fit. In January or February, I noticed kasi talaga na I was really overweight and that really affected my game," he said.
Javi GDL went on to say that at one point in time, he weighed at 225 lbs.
And that weight was far from ideal for a wing player like him. "I was really slow. I wasn't making my shots. That's why I had to discipline myself, have a good diet, eat healthy, and of course, work out," he shared.
Now, the older of the GDL brothers in State U's lineup is now somewhere between 190 to 200 lbs. - and is better because of it. "Yes, I feel quicker tuloy," he said.
Indeed, that quickness led to more than a few highlights like these:
And Javi GDL isn't stopping there just yet. As he put it, "I'm still on a diet right now actually because I feel I can do a lot more pa."
