University of Sto. Tomas ran and gunned their way right through the University of the Philippines for a convincing 85-69 victory in an early duel between playoff hopefuls in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, Saturday at Araneta Coliseum.
Soulemane Chabi Yo ran circles around reigning and defending MVP Bright Akhuetie, Mark Nonoy shone bright under the bright lights and on the big stage, and Renzo Subido caught fire in the Growling Tigers' back-to-back wins to start the season.
Chabi Yo posted an 18-point, 18-rebound double-double all while making Akhuetie, who still had 19 markers and 16 boards of his own, work overtime.
Nonoy then proved to be Espana's brand new super rookie in scoring 16 points on top of five rebounds and two assists.
The young playmaker's back-to-back hits coupled with back-to-back triples from Subido completed UST's 11-0 finishing kick in the last four minutes.
The black and gold just played at a different speed than its opponent and kept its composure even though Akhuetie and Javi Gomez de Liano willed the Fighting Maroons to as near as five, 69-74.
State U would go scoreless in the last four minutes, however, while at the other end, the Growling Tigers’ guards just sped away from them.
Subido wound up with 13 points while Rhenz Abando also added 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals of his own.
Dave Ando chimed in 10 points as well as team captain CJ Cansino didn’t even had to do much with just one point and two rebounds in only 13 minutes of play.
For UP, Akhuetie was flanked by Javi GDL and Jaydee Tungcab who had 15 and 11 points, respectively. Unable to keep up with their running and gunning opponents, they suffered their first setback following a season-opening win.
