Here come the Growling Tigers.
UST has put the entire UAAP on notice after dominating last year’s losing finalist UP Saturday in the Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Big Dome.
The Growling Tigers were in control all game long, and as the Fighting Maroons tried to mount a rally, UST dropped a final 11-0 bomb to take over solo first place in the new season with a clean 2-0 mark.
Rookie Mark Nonoy hit a long three and veteran guard Renzon Subido added another two big hits from deep in that late run and UST finished the game with a rather convincing 16-point decision.
Still, the Tigers have downplayed their own big win, it’s just one in a long road back to true contention.
“Hindi ko iniisip na statement eh,” head coach Aldin Ayo said.
“Siguro sa paper, talented talaga yung UP pero lahat napaghahandaan. Isang laro lang naman to eh. Meron pang, ilan pa? Dose pa eh,” he added.
UST’s resolve and unbeaten start will be tested next week when the Growling Tigers take on two-time defending champion Ateneo.
The Growling Tigers have a signature preseason win over the Blue Eagles but that was in the preseason, that does not count.
Wednesday’s mega clash will and UST will be gunning for its first true statement win this season.
“Obviously they [Blue Eagles] are the best collegiate team, gusto lang namin makadikit then let’s see kung ano pwedeng mangyari sa laro. Gusto namin nandun lang, dikit. But we are going to do our best,” Ayo said.
“This is a competition. Every time you compete, every time you play, of course, you always aim to win. And you are going to do your best, you are going to squeeze everything just to win. We’re going to do our best and hopefully maganda resulta,” he added.
