This time a year ago, Mark Nonoy was still in Negros Occidental and just about to transfer to University of Sto. Tomas High School.
Back then, the 5-foot-8 playmaker was only dreaming of being under the bright lights and on the big stage of the UAAP.
Fast forward one year and Nonoy was a key cog in the back-to-back wins to start the season for UST's Srs. squad.
The explosive guard turned in his best game yet with 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists as the black and gold ran and gunned right through the Fighting Maroons, Saturday at Araneta Coliseum.
And all of that, he did opposite some of the stars he was, at one point in time, just dreaming of facing off against. "Idol ko rin yung mga yun. Sa TV ko lang sila nakikita dati and then ngayon, nakalaban ko na," he answered when asked about playing against the likes of former Mythical Team members Juan Gomez de Liano and Ricci Rivero.
He then continued, "Sila rin yung naging motivation ko this season tapos ngayon, nag-compete kami and natalo namin sila."
Still, Nonoy could only acknowledge that he and the rest of his teammates wouldn't be able to do anything without the all-out support being given to them by the faithful over in Espana. "Siyempre, may kaba pa rin kasi iba na 'to, pero yung suporta ng UST community, nandyan lang sila lagi sa likod namin. Hinding-hindi nila kami iiwan," he shared.
He then continued, "So kami, basta gagawin lang namin yung pinapagawa ni coach sa amin."
Indeed, the 19-year-old did just that and now, he has scored a win over his idols.
