UAAP 82: Gonzales wasn't exactly feeling too hot in his career game for FEU

L-Jay Gonzales set up Far Eastern University's first win and bounce back win in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Behind his 14-point, eight-assist, eight-rebound, three-steal effort, the Tamaraws charged through University of the East and into the win column, Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.
Don't call that stat line an almost triple-double, however. "Ang layo. 'Di naman almost," head coach Olsen Racela said, through chuckles, when one reporter asked Gonzales about stuffing the stat sheet.
Clearly, though, coach Olsen was joshing around and was nothing but proud of the effort of his new starting point guard. "Tradition naman na guard-heavy ang FEU. We always rely on our guards and this season is no different," the former said as the latter, along with the other guards of the green and gold, dominated their counterparts in scoring, 55-14.
As it turns out, though, Gonzales wasn't exactly at 100 percent even while he was doing it all. "Medyo masama yung pakiramdam ko. Nung last training pa tapos sumasakit din kasi yung Achilles ko," he told reporters post-game.
He then continued, "Tinatanong ni Coach Olsen kung masakit na or kaya pa, pero okay pa naman ako."
Indeed, throughout the final frame, he was getting subbed in and out to be able to get extra breathers.
No matter what, though, the 5-foot-8 court general wasn't going to miss the chance to steer FEU back on track. "Iniisip ko lang na galing kami sa talo so kailangang manalo, kailangang mag-bounce back," he said.
Through it all, Gonzales was a threat to tally a triple-double.
That, however, was the farthest thing from his mind. "Sinabihan na nga nila ako kanina tungkol dun, pero ako, okay na yun. Ang mahalaga, nandito ako, naka-focus ako sa laro," he said.
He then continued, "Nag-eenjoy lang ako sa laro, wala akong iniisip na marami. Pag nakapasa ka nang maayos, ang sarap lang sa feeling."
