De La Salle University had the highest of highlights, but it was Ateneo de Manila University that remained in complete command in their first rivalry game in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
At the controls were Nieto twins Mike and Matt, but all of the Blue Eagles were also online in their 79-69 domination of their archrival Green Archers, Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.
The Nietos got going early on, combining for 23 points in the first half, most of which came in the 21-1 second quarter tear that turned a two-point edge, 30-28, into a 51-29 advantage at halftime.
The back-to-back defending champions went on that tear not long after Thirdy Ravena was put on a poster by Filipino-American Jamie Orme-Malonzo.
Indeed, Ateneo remained cool, calm, and collected and had quick counters each and every time its fierce foe tried to come close.
La Salle last threatened inside the last three minutes with a 15-5 run to pull within 67-75 only to see Gian Mamuyac then come up big with four of his 14 points the rest of the way.
In the end, Mike had 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Matt had 13 markers and three boards of his own.
Ravena, for his standards, only had six points, two rebounds, and three assists, but his energy was still there as they began their title defense with back-to-back convincing victories.
That also went for all of the Blue Eagles who outworked their opponents in terms of offensive rebounds, 27-19, and second chance points, 24-12.
Despite the defeat in their debut, the Green Archers put up a fight with Orme-Malonzo pacing them with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double while Justine Baltazar had his own 10 markers and 12 boards.
