Right after the final buzzer sounded in the University of the Philippines' come-from-behind win against Adamson University last Sunday, chants of "MVP! MVP!" rang around the MOA Arena.
Of course, the Fighting Maroons' faithful were serenading Bright Akhuetie who coolly, calmly, and collectedly converted four free throws to bookend an 8-0 rally to close the contest.
For the always amiable 6-foot-8 Nigerian powerhouse, though, he was just doing what he was supposed to do. "I just blocked (out all the noise) and thought it's just like what we're doing in practice. I just had to knock them down regardless of what the score is," he shared.
What's more impressive? Akhuetie hit his last two free throws after a bad fall that led to him taking some time to get up from the floor. "I'm fine. I'll be fine and that's all that matters," he said afterward as, apparently, it was his ankle that took the hit.
Whatever it is, the reigning and defending MVP once more lived up to being a UP Fighting Maroon. "It's just the way it is - you have to fight on 'til the end which was what we brought out. We fought 'til the end and live with the result so I feel great because we won," he said.
