University of Sto. Tomas threw away the ball many times, Sunday at MOA Arena, but when it mattered most, it didn’t throw away its golden opportunity to steal the win.
Rallying from five points down in the last minute of regulation, the Growling Tigers forced overtime before ultimately fending off luckless National University, 87-74, for a mighty rebound in the UAAP 82 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Rhenz Abando and Soulemane Chabi Yo came alive in the endgame and carried the black and gold back inside the winners’ circle at 3-1. "Sinwerte kami sa dulo. We did not play our game sa first three and a half quarters, pero buti, nag-pick up kami sa dulo," head coach Aldin Ayo said post-game.
The prized transferee from Philippine College of Science and Technology in Pangasinan dropped 13 of his 21 points in the endgame, none bigger than his two triples in the last two minutes of regulation and two treys in overtime.
It was Chabi Yo, though, who finished off a setup by Mark Nonoy that tied the tally at 70-all with 2.1 ticks to go in the fourth period. "Buti bumuhos pa rin yung mga bata especially sa dulo. While our opponents were celebrating, we were able to convert and force overtime," coach Aldin said.
Dave Ildefonso's triple try then clanged off the rim to force overtime and there, UST went on an 8-3 run right off the gates that eventually ended as a well-earned comeback win.
The Bulldogs just ran out of gas in the extra period as Ildefonso fouled out early on.
The Growling Tigers did nothing but take full advantage as Abando outscored all of their opponents by his lonesome, 6-4.
He also wound up with six rebounds and two assists to his name while Chabi Yo posted a 23-marker, 20-board double-double.
Sherwin Concepcion also added 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists while Nonoy chimed in nine markers and six boards and two dimes of his own.
All of that allowed the Espana-based team to overcome turning the ball over 25 times.
The Bulldogs were paced by Ildefonso who had 16 points while John Lloyd Clemente had 12 markers. At the wrong end of a rally, however, they suffered a third heartbreak in as many games in the tournament.
