ANTIPOLO - Through four games, Rey Suerte had been, bar none, the best scorer in all of the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament,
The one-and-done star had been on a tear for University of the East, averaging 22.8 points - and his most recent outing was a 31-point masterpiece, including the game-winner, in their breakthrough win at the expense of De La Salle University.
On Sunday at Ynares Center here, however, Suerte only had four points to go along with four turnovers.
Even more, he was frustrated into 2-of-15 shooting from the field.
Post-game, though, he was nothing but gracious in defeat. "Eto stats kanina," he told reporters who were holding the game stats as they were interviewing him.
He then continued, with a smile, "Tsk. Rey Malas."
Turning serious, though, the talented transferee only acknowledged that this was coming sooner than later. "Siyempre expected ko na yun, na dedepensahan talaga nila ako. Tapos medyo maalat na nga yung kamay, hinaluan pa ng malas," he said.
Come to think of it, however, the fact that game plans now have to be centered around Suerte is actually a good thing. "Siyempre, grabe, nakaka-overwhelm kasi talagang pinaghahandaan nila ako at alam nila ang kaya kong gawin," he said.
That is exactly why Suerte is also well aware he has to try and make his mark somewhere other than scoring. As he put it, "Kakaiba rito kasi pag gusto ka nila i-stop, ma-stop ka talaga. Kaya kanina, sinubukan ko talaga mag-adjust na nung wala akong nasu-shoot, nag-focus ako sa depensa, pasa, rebounds."
He then continued, "Kailangan ganun pa rin sa mga susunod na laro."
