UST bares teeth vs FEU to barge back into UAAP 82 win column

ANTIPOLO - University of Sto. Tomas rode a big wave in the third quarter to drown Far Eastern University, 82-74, Sunday at Ynares Center here and drive back inside the winners’ circle in the UAAP 82 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Down five at halftime, the Growling Tigers scored seven unanswered points to open the third quarter for their first lead of the game, 41-39.
And after the Tamaraws charged back to retake a 49-48 edge, Sherwin Concepcion exploded for his entire 12-point output by hitting four triples in a row to punctuate a 19-6 surge that put UST ahead, 67-55, early in the final frame.
Both the lead and the momentum would remain with them until the final buzzer as Renzo Subido and Ira Bataller made their free throws to make sure there would be no collapse this time around.
"That was a good game. That was a good war to bounce back sa last namin na talo," head coach Aldin Ayo said, referring to how they were at the wrong end of a win-stealing 18-0 run by Adamson University just four days ago. "They responded to my challenge na they have to show up.
Subido and Bataller wound up with 11 and eight points, respectively, while Beninese ball of energy Soulemane Chabi Yo posted another double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds.
Rookie guard Mark Nonoy also added 11 points and six rebounds to help the Growling Tigers bounce back into the win column now at 4-2.
On the other hand, FEU dropped down to 2-3 in the standings even after a 16-point, four-rebound, and three-assist effort from L-Jay Gonzales.
UST 82 - Chabi Yo 21, Concepcion 12, Nonoy 11, Subido 11, Abando 10, Bataller 8, Paraiso 3, Ando 2, Cansino 2, Huang 2, Cuajao 0.
FEU 74 - Gonzales 16, Torres 14, Ebona 11, Comboy 10, Bienes 6, Tuffin 6, Alforque 4, Stockton 4, Nunag 3, Cani 0, Celzo 0, Tchuente 0.
QUARTER SCORES: 14-24, 34-39, 64-55, 82-74.
