Ateneo de Manila University was ice cold in the first half, Wednesday at MOA Arena, but caught fire for 32 points in the third quarter to burn down University of the East, 85-68, and bag its sixth straight win to open the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Blue Eagles actually found themselves at the wrong end of an inspired start by the Red Warriors in the first two quarters before the former went on a 23-5 tear to, all of a sudden, get on top of the latter by 17, 57-40.
Adrian Wong then gave the defending champions their biggest lead of the game with a triple late in the third period for a score of 69-47 in their favor.
In the end, Wong had 11 points, all coming in the third period, to his name while Ange Kouame posted a 16-marker, 12-rebound double-double to go along with three blocks and two assists.
Thirdy Ravena also added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks to help Ateneo stay spotless ahead of a highly anticipated rematch of last year's Finals with the University of the Philippines on Sunday
On the other hand, UE absorbed their fifth loss in six games even after an all-around 15-point, six-rebound, six-rebound, and three-block effort by Rey Suerte.
