UAAP: I’m praying for it –- Coach Almadro on Maraguinot's return

Like what I’ve said to Maddie, to Bea last year, ‘Your presence will be much important to the team because you’re an Ate. Because you still got some talent to share. Kung gusto mo bumalik, kung gusto mo to share, to give back and go back to your school, to your alma mater you’re always welcome' -- Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro on Jho Maraguinot
Ateneo de Manila University head coach Oliver Almadro hopes that the same formula that he used to convince Bea De Leo and Maddie Madayag to play their final eligibility year will work to get hitter Jho Maraguinot back for the Lady Eagles’ UAAP Season 82 title defense next year.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday amidst the buzz of Maraguinot possibly suiting up one last time for the Ateneo, Almadro said that he and the rest of the Lady Eagles are waiting for her decision.
“Well ah, I’ve been always telling Jho na if she wants to help, she will always be welcome,” said Almadro. “And sabi ko nga talent is not important, what’s important is the presence.”
Her veteran presence according to Almadro will be needed to lead a promising core of young talents following the departure of Madayag, De Leon and Tolentino, who still has one playing year left, after the Lady Eagles regained the crown last May and captured its third overall.
“Like what I’ve said to Maddie, to Bea last year, ‘Your presence will be much important to the team because you’re an Ate. Because you still got some talent to share. Kung gusto mo bumalik, kung gusto mo to share, to give back and go back to your school, to your alma mater you’re always welcome,’” said Almadro.
Talks of Maraguinot, who last played for Ateneo back in 2018, has been circulating on social media for some time and she herself said that she’s open to donning the Lady Eagles jersey one last time if everything falls into place.
However, Almadro said that he doesn’t want to put pressure the spiker and would rather have her take her time to think about it.
“I’m looking forward and I’m praying for it na she discern well and decide na tumulong ulit,” said Almadro.
For now, all the mentor could do is wait and hopefully get the result that he wants.
“Of course, everybody has an extra effort [to convince her] but we have to give it to her,” he said. “Decision niya, but I just have to pray for it, pray for proper discernment. Sabi ko nga ‘Give back and go back.’ ‘Yun ang pinakaimportante to continue the legacy na iniwanan ng mga seniors niya.”
Aside from Maraguinot, other former Lady Eagles like Jia Morado, Jamie Lavitoria, Marge Tejada, Ana Gopico and Ria Lo are all still eligible to return if they choose to.
