Dave Ildefonso went missing for National University as they fell to University of the East, Saturday at Araneta Coliseum.
That's all because, apparently, the Bulldogs' top gun was in the pocket of Neil Tolentino.
The Red Warriors' defensive menace, alongside Nick Abanto and Rey Suerte, frustrated Ildefonso to just six points in 3-of-13 shooting while turning the ball over seven times.
In fact, National U's second-year star got going late in the game, it was when Tolentino was on the bench. "Pagkapinapasok ako, ready lang ako. Actually, (nung nandun pa ako), two points pa lang si Ildefonso tapos nung bago ako bumalik, six points na," the latter said.
He then continued, "Importante yung depensa sa kanya kasi pag naka-score siya, may posibilidad na matalo pa kami kaya ginawa ko lang talaga yung role ko - defensive player talaga."
Indeed, Ildefonso's personal run came to an end once UE's first-year defensive stopper was sent back in and energized their fine finish to the game. "Na-motivate lang talaga ako na dedepensa sa kanya. In-accept ko lang yung role ko sa team kasi ako talaga yung bumubuhay sa depensa namin e," the latter shared.
He then continued, "Hindi ko hinahayaang basta-bastang 'di dedepensa kasi gagayahin nila ako e - pag 'di ako dedepensa, 'di rin sila dedepensa. Ako nga kasi energizer dito sa team."
And from today until tomorrow, Tolentino will always take pride in making life difficult for the opponents' best offensive weapon. As he put it, "Proud ako sa role ko na ganito. Alam niyo naman na since high school pa lang, wala akong paki kung 'di ako maka-score, defensive player lang ako."
He then continued, "Yun talaga role ko kahit saang team ako mapunta."
