Encho Serrano did the heavy lifting, Aljun Melecio delivered the goods, and De La Salle University dragged down University of Sto. Tomas, 92-77, for a much-needed bounce back win in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, Saturday at MOA Arena.
Serrano turned in the best game in his collegiate career with 29 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists while Melecio waxed hot with 26 markers of his own built on 6-of-9 shooting from deep as the Green Archers played inspired from start to finish.
The Taft-based team was in complete command for majority of the matchup before Rhenz Abando pulled the Growling Tigers to just down four, 50-54, with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter
It was at that point, however, that Serrano had 13 points in a 15-8 run that re-increased the La Salle lead to 69-58 inside the last nine minutes.
They wouldn't be threatened the rest of the way to improve to 3-4.
Filipino-American Jamie Malonzo also added 13 points, nine rebounds, and two assists to help the Green Archers overcome a sorry loss to the University of the Philippines three days ago wherein they fell victim to a game-winning three by Juan Gomez de Liano. "We were due to win. The way the team has been practicing, it showed in today's game," head coach Gian Nazario said post-game.
On the other hand, UST dropped to 4-3 in the standings even after a breakout game by Brent Paraiso who had 22 points as well as a double-double of 16 markers and 14 rebounds by Soulemane Chabi Yo.
