Philip Manalang made the most of his return to the first five, Alex Diakhite made his presence felt down low, and University of the East got the better of National University, 78-72, to make its way back inside the winners' circle of the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.

Manalang, sidelined by injury in the past two games, had the Red Warriors' first six points and, in all, their 16-4 start to the game eventually ended as a bounce back to 2-5 in the standings.

It was also the graduating guard who punctuated the 15-2 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that broke off a tied tally at 45-all and built up a 60-47 edge in UE's favor.

Rookies Patrick Wilson Yu, Mike Malonzo, and Migs Oczon, though, went on a 9-0 rush to pull the Bulldogs to within one, 68-69, inside the last four minutes.

It was at that point that Neil Tolentino and Diakhite took over and repulsed their opponents once and for all.

The Red Warriors' Senegalese bruiser remained a force with a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double on top of three blocks, three steals, and two assists to help his side put a stop to their two-game skid.

Tolentino then wound up with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Manalang had his own 13 markers, seven dimes, and four boards.

One-and-done star Rey Suerte struggled with his shooting, scoring only, for his standards, 12 points in 30 percent shooting, but had an impact elsewhere also with seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals as UE silenced National U which was fresh off their breakthrough win just four days ago.

Yu paced the Bulldogs with 17 points while Shaun Ildefonso chipped in 11 markers of his own. Top gun Dave Ildefonso, however, got thrown off his game by definite defense by Tolentino, Suerte, and Nick Abanto as he had just six points in 3-of-13 shooting while turning the ball over seven times.

They finish the first round in the basement, holding a 1-6 record.
