Alex Diakhite was much too much for Adamson University, Saturday at MOA Arena, and willed University of the East to its first winning streak in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, 80-74.
The Senegalese big man pounded in 29 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, putting the Red Warriors on his broad shoulders and carried them past the Soaring Falcons and all the way to their first back-to-back wins after a 1-5 start to the season.
Diakhite had five points in the 17-6 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that erased a two-point deficit, 48-50, and erected a 65-56 advantage in their favor.
Valandre Chauca and Jerrick Ahanmisi then shot Adamson to just within one, 68-69, inside the last six minutes only to see UE's 6-foot-8 powerhouse have half of the points in the 8-3 answer that re-increased their lead to 77-71, with under two minutes left.
That gap would stay strong until the final buzzer. "We got lucky today. We got the breaks and the players refused to lose," active consultant Lawrence Chongson said post-game.
Backstopping Diakhite was, of course, Rey Suerte who had 26 points, seven rebounds, and three assists just a day after turning 25-years-old.
Chris Conner also provided a big boost off the bench with seven points, helping UE tie the team it had just down for the sixth spot in the standings. "Adamson has a good team with a legendary coach. We beat them with effort," Chongson said.
For the Soaring Falcons, Lenda Douanga posted a 16-point, 17-rebound double-double while Jerom Lastimosa poured in 16 markers and six boards of his own.
With Chauca and Ahanmisi misfiring and merging for 20 points in 8-of-30 shooting, though, they suffered a second straight setback to start the second round.
