University of Sto. Tomas had no answers for Ateneo de Manila University, Saturday at MOA Arena.
The Growling Tigers had a ray of light, though, in the form of rookie guard Mark Nonoy who had a collegiate career-best 18 points built on four triples.
For Nonoy himself, he was just doing his job. "Sinunod ko lang mga sinasabi ni coach na mag-point guard ako. Execute lang daw kasi sakin din babagsak yung play," he said.
In the eyes of head coach Aldin Ayo, however, the promising prospect wasn't actually being a point guard in this one.
"To be honest, I'm worried he scored a lot of points because supposedly, he has to make his teammates better," he former said as the latter only had one assist to his name.
He then continued, "Next game lang, baka maghanap siya nang maghanap (ng shot) which is not his role. We want him to be a point guard, not a shooting guard."
Coach Aldin was also quick to point out, though, that Nonoy is still in the process of accepting this role as he's actually coming off a one-and-done season in the UAAP Jrs. where he was the one and only focus of the offense, posting per game counts of 21.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.6 steals. "Hindi yan nangyari sa high school because they have a different program there, pero lahat ng mali ni Mark ngayon, tinatama namin," he shared.
He then continued, "Gusto naming point guard siya. He really has to because walang shooting guard sa PBA na 5-8."
That is exactly why, moving forward, the one-time NCAA and one-time UAAP champion coach wants nothing more than to see his playmaker, well, make plays. "Hopefully, next game, hindi 18 points. I want him to score 10 points, 12 points, basta may 15 assists and matakbo yung plays namin tapos yung kalaban niyang ppint guard, 'di makapag-set. Yun ang hinihingi ko sa kanya," he said.
For his part, the 19-year-old is only meeting his mentor's challenge head-on. "Sa akin, gusto ko rin assists e kasi para mapaganda laro ng teammates ko. Sa akin kasi, parang score na rin yung assist," he said.
He then continued, "'Di lang 'to para sakin, para rin 'to sa team. Lahat kami, makikinabang pag maganda pag-execute namin."
