National University completed a clean sweep of Far Eastern University in the eliminations of the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.
Holding off the Tamaraws' late charge, the Bulldogs made sure they were the victors in the two teams' meetings in the first and second rounds.
That also means that this tournament, National U top gun Dave Ildefonso is undefeated against ninong Olsen Racela who just so happens to be FEU's head coach.
Even more, Ildefonso has posted per game counts of 23.5 points in 50 percent shooting to go along with 9.5 rebounds and an assist and a steal versus Racela's wards this campaign.
Of course, the two, great competitors that they are, are very much invested in all of their games - even though two of those have to come against one another.
That is exactly why godson and godfather didn't exactly show love for one another when the final buzzer sounded. "Hindi kami masyado nag-usap nun e kasi feeling ko medyo bad trip siya," the former said through chuckles.
Make no mistake, though, Ildefonso has nothing but love for Racela. As the former put it, "Pero pag nagkikita naman kami, lagi akong nagmamano tsaka nag-uusap kami."
In fact, the son of Philippine basketball legend Danny Ildefonso points to his tatay's teammate as the inspiration for his perimeter-oriented game. "Sinasabi lagi sa akin ni tatay palagi ka kung may gusto akong i-look up na guard, i-look up ko si ninong Olsen. Nung prime kasi ni tatay kaya siya nakakakuha ng points dahil sa playmaking ni ninong Olsen," he shared.
In their playing days, Danny I. and Olsen won seven championships together for San Miguel Beer.
Decades later, the younger Ildefonso has been a thorn on the side of Racela, now a mentor, in the UAAP 82.
Still, Dave I. is nothing but grateful to have ninong Olsen. "Buti na lang, naging ninong ko si ninong Olsen kasi may nagga-guide sa akin as point guard. Blessed ako na ninong ko siya at nandyan siya palagi para magbigay ng guidance," he said.
