University of Sto. Tomas rediscovered its shooting stroke, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum, and razed University of the East for a big-time 101-73 bounce back win in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament.
Just four days after shooting 28 percent from long-range in a loss to Ateneo de Manila University, the Growling Tigers bombarded their opponents with long-range missiles and buried them in a hole they could never get out of. "It was a good game. One of the factors kaya ganun yung laro kasi we were able to release the pressure," head coach Aldin Ayo said, talking about the two-game slide they had been on before this bounce back win.
The two teams were neck-and-neck late in the opening salvo and UST only had a two-point edge, 20-18.
From there, though, they detonated a 29-9 blast that built up a 49-27 advantage in their favor at the midway mark of the second quarter.
The Growling Tigers would only increase their lead to as much as 34, incinerating the Red Warriors until the final buzzer.
In all, they made good on 14 of their 42 attempts from deep.
Many players waxed hot, but nobody was hotter than Zachy Huang who fired a career-high 22 points built on 6-of-8 shooting from threes all off the bench. "Unang-una, I just lowered my expectations kasi nga, as what coach said, we put too much pressure on ourselves to play well. Today, we came in with the right mindset," he said as he and the rest of the reserves dominated their counterparts, 54-18.
It wasn't just form beyond the arc that the Espana-based squad did damage, however, as they blitzed UE on the run, with a 16-5 edge in fastbreak points.
They also owned the glass, 55-38, with Soulemane Chabi Yo accounting for 14 of those to go along with 22 points and two assists.
Rhenz Abando and CJ Cansino also merged for 16 rebounds on top of 15 points and, together with Brent Paraiso, did a standout job on Red Warriors' super scorer Rey Suerte who, for his standards, only had 10 points in 3-of-10 shooting from the field.
Mark Nonoy also added an all-around nine points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals to help UST improve to 5-4 and move to solo third.
On the other hand, the Red Warriors saw their two-game win run come to a close as they dropped to 3-6. Alex Diakhite paced them in this one with 24-point, 12-rebound double-double.
