ANTIPOLO - Ateneo de Manila University has dashed University of the East's chances in the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament once and for all with a resounding 84-50 rout, Sunday at Ynares Center here.
The Blue Eagles flat-out dominated the Red Warriors before flying to their 12th win in as many games.
At the same time, the defending champions' latest win cut the cord on the UE's contention as the latter fell to 3-9.
The red and white, though, actually hit back-to-back baskets to begin the game before falling victim to a 17-2 run by Ateneo.
That lead then blew up to 18, 53-25, courtesy of a 13-0 spurt to start the third quarter.
The Blue Eagles wouldn't stop there just yet and ultimately mounted an advantage of as much as 36, 82-46, thanks to a basket and bonus by Isaac Go late.
In the end, they counted 14 different players who contributed in the scoring column with Go the high man at 13 points, all but four coming from triples.
He wasn't alone with the sniping as Thirdy Ravena shot 2-of-4 from deep and totaled 11 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
Even Ange Kouame got in on the fun with three of his 11 points coming from downtown as he also got eight rebounds and three blocks.
In all, Ateneo fired 14 threes and finished with 50 points from the perimeter compared to its opponent's 10.
For the Red Warriors, Alex Diakhite showed the way with a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double.
Without an answer for the Blue Eagles' firepower, however, they will be unable to put an end to their 10-year playoff drought.
