If Rhenz Abando's foot was just one inch smaller, University of Sto. Tomas would have forced overtime against De La Salle University, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.
Down by nine inside the last three minutes, Abando shot the Growling Tigers to just down three, 77-80, with 10.9 ticks to go.
And it was also the long-limbed forward who tipped Aljun Melecio's inbound pass and then wasted no time bringing the ball to their side of the court.
There, Abando launched a shot from beyond the arc and saw the ball swish through the net.
From his steal to his shot, all Melecio could do was look on. Asked what was going through his head in that sequence, he answered, "'Di ko rin alam e. Tulala ako e. Nakatingin na lang (sa scoreboard)."
Only, the right big toe of UST's would be-hero was on the line - meaning, the shot wasn't a triple and it didn't tie the tally.
When the call was made, and therefore the La Salle lead held, their pint-sized playmaker could only breathe a sigh of relief. "Buti malaki sapatos niya," he shared through chuckles.
He then continued, referring to the smaller Renzo Subido, "Kung si Renzo yun, 'di stepping e."
Andrei Caracut only shared the same sentiment. As he put it, "Masarap, siyempre. Nung una, nakapanghihinayang e, pero nung tinawag na two, buti na lang."
Of course, this was much more than just a win for the Green Archers as a loss would have pushed them to the brink of elimination. "Importante kasi sa amin 'tong game na 'to kasi kung talo, wala na. Ang sarap lang sa feeling," Caracut said.
And that's all because, for once, lady luck smiled at the green and white. "Sa sobrang dami naming talo na one-point, siguro naman, natuto na kami. Buti na lang talaga, nag-stepping si Rhenz," Melecio said.
He then continued, "Masakit na e, masakit."
