The University of the Philippines got the usual numbers from Kobe Paras as well as all-around numbers from Juan Gomez de Liano to go over feisty National University, 80-77, Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum and all the way to a playoff berth in the UAAP 82 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Paras remained a force with 19 points on top of six assists and four rebounds just as Juan GDL registered his most complete game thus far with 11 markers, 11 boards, six dimes, and two steals to show the Fighting Maroons they way to their eighth win in 12 games.
With their second straight win, they are now assured of at least a playoff for a place in the Final Four - and losses by either Far Eastern University or De La Salle University in the remaining games in the day officially clinches for them a spot in the next round.
Still, it didn’t come easy as the Bulldogs were battling until the endgame.
State U’s lead was only two, 79-77, with 11.5 ticks to go on the clock thanks to two free throws by Shaun Ildefonso.
From there, however, Jun Manzo split from the stripe and then Ildefonso’s triple try rolled around the ring before falling out, sealing the deal in UP’s tightening of its grip on the second-seed.
Manzo wound up with 14 points, all but five coming in the final frame, to go along with four rebounds and two assists while Bright Akhuetie had his own 16-marker, 12-board double-double.
For National U, Dave Ildefonso topped the scoring column with 24 points to go along with six rebounds, six assists, and three steals while kuya Shaun chipped in 10 markers and five boards of his own.
Running out of gas in the dying moments, they dropped to 2-10.
